Kenny Pieper was born in Alabama and raised in the mountains of North Carolina. He began his craft career in high school when he studied at the Penland School of Crafts. After high school, Kenny moved to Detroit under scholarship at the Center for Creative Studies; he subsequently received his B.F.A. from California College of Art and Design, Oakland, CA. he then spent 16 years working as a glassblower in the San Francisco East Bay area. Kenny’s career came full circle when he left California and moved back to North Carolina. While constructing a studio there, He worked at Penland School and managed the glassblowing and lampworking studios. It was during this fruitful time that he developed his expertise in the tradition of Italian glass. Kenny now resides in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Reflecting the harmony and beauty of his surroundings, Kenny produces an exquisite line of glass vessels and sculpture.

Autumn Primavera -These vessels are imbued with elegance and classicism. Pieper employs the Italian glass technique of Primavera, which creates the web-like crackle within the glass. The artist melts the temperamental colors of gold and red creating the perfect color combination. The choice of colors is inspired by autumn in the mountains.

The Primavera Process -

After Forming a bubble of colored glass, Kenny plunges that hot bubble into a bucket of water. The bucket of water contains a special formula of chemicals that create glass, such as bone ash and soda ash. The meeting of hot glass and water is tempestuous. The water fizzes violently and cracks the surface of the glass, while the chemicals in the water adhere to those cracks. This is what creates the white, web-like pattern that you see within the colored glass. After the bubble is taken out of the water, it is heated. A layer of clear glass is gathered over it to encase the webbing pattern. This extra layer of clear prevents surface cracks in the glass and ensures an even surface.

End Result - Captivating, Classic, Distinctive
